Brain Dump Last Man Standing
Instructions: Give students a topic and 3 minutes to write down everything they remember about it. Students take turns sharing one item from their list. Others cross off matching items. Continue until one student has an uncrossed item.

Instructions: Divide whiteboards into three sections. Read a statement. Students write "True" or "False" and, if false, correct the statement. Hold up boards for quick assessment.

Examples:

"Ngāi Tahu signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1850." (False, fix to 1840)
"James Cook was the first European to sight New Zealand." (False, fix to Abel Tasman)
"Christchurch was founded as an Anglican settlement." (True)

What's the Connection
Instructions: Provide two terms. Students write a word or short phrase connecting them. Discuss various connections students make. You may also wish students to draw an image that communicates the connection.

Examples:

Aoraki and Mount Cook - Ngāi Tahu name and English name for the same mountain
Lyttelton and Christchurch - Connected by first rail tunnel in New Zealand
Kupe and Aoraki - Both feature in Māori creation stories of New Zealand

And the Caption is...
Instructions: Project an image (map, political cartoon, person, event). Students write a creative caption or identify who, what, or where - that explain briefly why the image might be considered historically significant. Use responses to start discussions.

Examples:

An image of gold miners in Gabriel's Gully, Otago
A picture of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi

Cause and Effect Chain
Instructions: Provide an initial event. Students write its effect, which becomes the cause for the next event, creating a chain of 5-6 events in correct order. Encourage them to be creative in terms of how they display the 'chain'.

Example chain in order:

Initial Cause: Discovery of gold in Otago (1861)
Effect/New Cause: Rapid population growth in Dunedin
Effect/New Cause: Development of infrastructure (roads, ports)
Effect/New Cause: Increased demand for food and supplies
Effect/New Cause: Expansion of agriculture in Canterbury
Final Effect: South Island becomes a major economic center of New Zealand

Example chain out of order:

Effect/New Cause: Increased demand for food and supplies
Effect/New Cause: Development of infrastructure (roads, ports)

Historical Significance Scale
Instructions: Students draw a 1-10 scale. Name a historical event, person, or development. Students rate its significance and briefly justify their score. Discuss ratings as a class. You could also get the students to draw 'significance' to get them thinking.
